Four Yass Valley fires under control
Four fires broke out in the Yass Valley today.
Numerous fire crews and bull dozers were sent to locations at Bloomfield near Blakney Creek, Otterbourne on Wargeila Road, a property on Shingle Hill Way at Gundaroo and an area of the Goodrabidgee Forrest near Carey’s Cave at Wee Jasper.
Rural Fire Service zone manager Peter Alley said at 5.30pm all were expected to be fully contained within the hour.
The first at Bloomfield is now contained on three sides with crews and a dozer working on the fourth. A smaller second fire was discovered close by but it has been contained.
Both were caused by lightning.
A fire at Otterbourne has been contained and crews were mopping up at 5.30pm. It is also believed to have been caused by lightning.
The third fire burnt out 25 acres on Shingle Hill Way. The cause of this fire was still under investigation but Mr Alley assumed it was also due to a lightning strike during thunderstorms around the region last night.
A fourth fire at Wee Jasper was only small and was expected to be contained soon, with the Wee Jasper Rural Fire Service truck, several Tumut Forrestry crews and a helicopter tending it.
Rural Fire Service crews from Bloomfield, Manton, Rye Park, Bowning, Blakney, Binalong and the Yass Fire Service were among those called out today.
