Yass truckie charged over pedestrian death

FROM THE FORCE: A Yass truck driver has been charged over the death of an elderly pedestrian on the Hume Highway earlier this year.
Police charged the 46-year-old this week with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death and driving a vehicle with an illicit drug in his blood.
They had been awaiting the results of mandatory drug and alcohol tests performed at the time of the incident.
Scoop has previously reported the 83-year-old Queensland man was killed instantly on March 11 as he stood on or near the northbound lanes of the Hume Highway at Manton Ridge at about 10.45am.
He had reportedly parked his vehicle on the shoulder of the highway to discuss directions with friends sitting in another car which was parked behind him. His wife had remained sitting in the passenger seat of their car.
He was struck by a b-double truck.
Two elderly people in the rear car were trapped inside the wreckage for a short time as authorities worked to free them.
The truck driver and car occupants were taken to Yass Hospital suffering shock.
Both northbound lanes of the Hume had to be closed to traffic for five hours during clean up operations.
Wargeila bridge survivor remains in a coma
A young driver critically injured when he crashed into a pylon at the Wargeila Road bridge overpass, has been taken off life support at Canberra Hospital.
The 26 year-old Woolloomooloo man suffered serious head injuries after he lost control of his black Lexus sedan on the Hume Highway on Saturday, June 6.
He was trapped inside the wreckage for more than an hour before authorities could free him.
He was treated at the scene before being airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.
He remains in a coma in a critical condition.

Man injured after Bowning crash
A 66 year-old Wagga Wagga man was taken to Yass Hospital with a suspected broken wrist and minor injuries and lacerations after crashing his vehicle on the Hume Highway at Bowning.
The man had been driving a white Holden Astra when it left the roadway and flipped onto the median strip at about 10.30am on Saturday.
He was taken to Yass Hospital and was later transferred to Canberra Hospital.
Police hunt brazen car thief
Yass police are reviewing footage of a thief driving away with a cleaner’s ute parked just metres from where he was working on Thursday morning.
The white Mitsubishi dual cab ute was stolen from the car park between the Yass Public Library and Banjo Paterson Park at 5.20am.
The owner heard his ute engine start while he was working nearby, and saw the thief drive it away onto Rossi Street and then Church Street, Yass.
Police are interested in talking to a man aged between 25 to 30 years-old with an olive complexion, about 175cm to 180cm tall, of medium build, who was wearing a black beanie, a large black Nike-brand jacket on top of a green shirt, blue jeans and black shoes.
The offender was captured on closed circuit television security footage.
The stolen ute has a canopy and roof racks.

Valuable sheep mob stolen
A mob of sheep valued at $15,400 has been stolen from a Ladevale property.
Police said the farmer reported 154 sheep went missing from his property on Elms Road between May 15 and June 16.
The sheep were Corriedale, Merino and Corriedale-Merino Cross breeds and had been recently shorn.
The fencing is in tact and police suspect they have been stolen.
Fuel theft
A 44 year-old Woongarrah man has been charged after stealing petrol from the United Service Station in Comur Street, Yass.
Police said the man had filled his gold Commodore with $16.19 worth of fuel before driving off without paying.
He was later arrested in Tumut.
He will appear before Yass Local Court on August 4.
Car theft foiled by flat battery
Police are appealing for witnesses to an attempted car theft at Yass Railway Station car park.
The car owner had boarded a train on June 13 at 12.10am, leaving the vehicle parked at the station for a week.
Upon his return he noticed the rear window had been smashed and the ignition cover had been removed.
It appears the car wouldn’t start because of battery failure.
Forensic police are examining the vehicle and investigations are continuing.
